Buying a tonneau cover for your car’s bed can be a frustrating business to get yourself into. That’s exactly why I’ve made a list of some of my favorite, and also some of the most used tonneau covers for this car.
The best tonneau cover for Toyota Tacoma isn’t something that’s universal. All people need different things from different products, so one option might be viable for me, and the other one might be viable for you.
Best Tonneau Cover For Toyota Tacoma
That’s why this review won’t be based purely on my personal preference, but on some unbiased facts about the products as well.
Either way, I know you’ll find something to at least consider as an option because some of these really might seem like a steal when you compare the price to the quality of the product you’re getting for it.
Without much more stalling, let’s jump into the list and see what’s out there in the market – there’s something for everyone!
Does Toyota Tacoma Have A Tonneau Cover?
First, let’s take a look at some basic things about this car. Toyota Tacoma has a place that a tonneau cover can be mounted on.
These cars have a truck bed, and people usually use it to store particular things that need to be kept dry and untouched. This is why I’ve made a list that’ll help you pick the best tonneau cover for your car.
Some people see pictures of Toyota Tacoma with something else instead of a tonneau cover and ask themselves “can this car even support it?”, but rest assured – your car will most probably come with a space that’ll need a tonneau cover.
The 8 Best Tonneau Covers For Tacoma In 2020
1. TruXedo TruXsport Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
This is one of the best-rated tonneau covers for this specific car. A Toyota Tacoma tonneau cover must check some boxes in order to be considered “easy to install”.
The biggest problem that I had in this segment is that you have to open the tailgate to get closer to the latch mechanism.
TruXedo TruXsport Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
That might seem like a hassle, but trust me – it’s much easier than some of the other installation processes for some of the other tonneau covers on this list.
It took me around 25 minutes to get it up and running, so if you’ve done something like this before you shouldn’t need more than 30 minutes.
Another thing that I like about this tonneau cover is that it’s pretty tight on your bed cover which means that you won’t have any problems with rain or dust getting in.
I’ve used mine for a couple of months in autumn which means I had a lot of time to experience both rain and wind that made leaves and dirt go everywhere.
I didn’t notice anything getting into my truck bed, so if you install it right – you shouldn’t have any problems.
One thing you need to be careful about is measuring your truck bed. I’ve recommended this tonneau cover to a buddy of mine who was on a budget, and this one didn’t fit his truck bed.
So, always measure twice or even three times to make sure that this tonneau cover fits your truck.
|Easy to install||Measuring process|
This might be a good starting tonneau cover, but definitely not the best bed cover for Tacoma. It’s a good starter option, but that’s it.
2. Tyger Auto (Soft Top) T3 Tri-Fold Truck Tonneau Cover
I have a few problems with this cover. This doesn’t mean that this is a bad Tacoma truck bed cover, but it means that there are some problems you might encounter while using this product.
The thing I’ve noticed right off the bat is that it doesn’t have a lock. The only way I was able to close it and keep it that way is with my tailgate closed.
Tyger Auto (Soft Top) T3 Tri-Fold Truck Tonneau Cover
This might be a problem since many people rely on these products to have a locking mechanism of their own, and are not counting on their tailgate to be the only source of security they have.
Another thing that is a bit concerning, to say the least, is the fact that sliding clamps are quite unstable and are degrading faster than they should.
What I mean by that is that you’ll notice your clamps loosening and not doing the job right. This might be fixable a few times, but at one moment they’ll become too far gone you’ll have to take the option of ordering some spare parts into consideration.
One thing I do like about this tonneau cover is that the manufacturer includes weatherstripping in the box that the tonneau cover comes in.
This lets you seal all the air holes you might find on your Toyota Tacoma and can be a lifesaver in some situations where your stuff needs protection from the outside weather.
|Weatherstrips found in the box||Doesn’t have a lock|
|Easy to install||Sliding clamps are degrading quickly|
All-in-all, this is one of the mediocre tonneau covers out there. If you’re looking to avoid something that has as many benefits as it causes difficulties, be sure to look for an alternative.
3. BAK BAKFlip MX4 hard Folding Truck bed Tonneau Cover
This is one of the few tonneau covers that should take you upwards of about an hour to make it fit. The installation process is nothing complicated, but it takes time in order to get it up on your Tacoma.
Don’t get me wrong, you might be frustrated at times, but that doesn’t mean that the process is complicated per se.
BAK BAKFlip MX4 hard Folding Truck bed Tonneau Cover
When you finish the installation process, you’ll notice the sheer sturdiness of this product. This truly amazed me, as some of the competitors in this field really tend to lack in this compartment.
Another thing that took me by surprise is that this is one of these folding truck beds that you can have folded in one, two, or all three compartments depending on what you need.
Also, this might be the best Tacoma tonneau cover when we’re talking about the looks. The visual enhancement that this cover gave to my car is probably the biggest surprise of them all.
You’ll see for yourself if you decide to go with this cover, so don’t let me tell you about it – but see for yourself if you decide to go with this one.
One thing that might be a deal-breaker for some of you is that the price is a bit higher than for some of the other tonneau covers on this list.
|A simple installation process||Takes a long time to install|
|The sturdiness of the cover||High price|
|Customizable cover lifts|
As you can see, this might be the best option so far. The price might be a problem for some of you, but for the ones that price is not a problem – this is definitely a good buy.
4. Extang Solid Fold 2.0 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
I strongly believe that almost every tonneau cover should be weather-proof. Sadly, this is not one of them.
For the price that this is selling at, it should most definitely have this characteristic. Don’t misunderstand me, no serious amount of water will get through this tonneau cover, but there are some instances where you’ll notice a bit of water or dirt getting in.
Extang Solid Fold 2.0 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
This might not be a huge con for some of you that live in states where the weather is dry for the most part, but for everyone that doesn’t have the comfort of dry weather (including me), you should keep this in mind when thinking about buying this tonneau cover.
For me and any other people I’ve talked to, this is the biggest con of this cover. Most people experience heavy rain at least once a year, and this cover won’t protect your belongings from it.
On the other side, not being weather-proof makes it quite easy to install since you don’t have to think about all of the nooks and crannies that you’ll have to fill in order to make it completely resistant to rain or dirt.
Once you finish with your installation process, you’ll notice that it looks like it could hold some weight. It’s both made to look that way and to feel that way. 120 pounds shouldn’t be a problem for this tonneau cover.
|Easy to install||Not weather-proof|
|Perfect for dry weather|
It’s clear that the quality of this tonneau cover depends on where you live. If the weather around you is dry – this might be the cover for you. But, if you’re experiencing heavy rain or wind, you need to keep looking.
5. Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
The value for price factor is the hugest thing for this cover. Trust me when I say – you won’t get a better offer for this money.
Such a low price sounds quite suspicious when a product like this is in question. To be honest, it sounded too good to be true and that’s the only reason I’ve tried it out.
Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
It turns out that it’s much more than a cheap tonneau cover for your truck bed. The overall quality of this product is on a much higher level than I expected for this price range.
Also, the process of installing it and disassembling it is quite easy and quick. It shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes at best, and it’s not a complicated procedure at all.
One thing that I don’t like about this part is that there’s a gaping hole in the back of this tonneau cover, so it certainly isn’t a weather-proof one.
I first thought that I made a mistake in the assembling process, but it turns out that it’s just the way it was made.
The look and the feel of this product aren’t premium, but there are certainly some cheaper-feeling products for more money than this one requires.
It’s also made out of vinyl so if that’s something that you’re not a fan of, you should keep that in mind.
|Fast assembly and disassembly||Has holes after installing|
|Made from vinyl|
If you’re looking for a tonneau cover that doesn’t have any holes or spaces when you mount it, you should invest a couple of more bucks into your budget for this project and search for an alternative.
6. MAXMATE Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
This tonneau cover is quite a snug fit for your Toyota Tacoma. I haven’t seen a better fit for this car in quite some time.
It’s also quite steady when driving a car at a speed of approximately around 60mph. This is quite important for me, and I assume it’s important for most of you as well. Driving fast and not worrying about your tonneau cover moving an inch is quite a good feeling, to me at least.
MAXMATE Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
There are some competitors whose products don’t have this characteristic, so you have to check on them every 20 minutes or so, and I can tell you that it’s not a pleasant feeling.
That being said, there are a few things that you’d probably notice if you took a closer look. Clamps can be loose and not strong enough so if you do notice some noises or moving that’s why.
This tonneau cover is also $200, but as you can see its quality is considerably lower than the one I talked about before.
Another thing that you should pay attention to is the possibility of this tonneau cover arriving torn or broken.
This didn’t happen to me, but it happened to a friend of mine that purchased it at the same time that I did.
The package was undamaged from the outside, but the contents were severely damaged and torn.
If this happens, you should contact the supplier and ask for a new one or for a refund.
|Cheap||Weak clamps (need extra attention)|
|Easy to install||Low-quality packaging|
|Can be sturdy when driving||Can rattle or move while driving if not installed properly|
|Overall low-quality item|
I think it’s pretty clear that you should stay far away from this product. It’s evident that there are better options for the same price (look at the product above).
7. oEdRo Upgraded Soft Tri-fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
This tonneau cover is probably one of the easiest and most straightforward to install. I don’t say that easily, but let me tell you – I was surprised at how easy it was to get it operational.
The only problem that you could have when installing it is that clamps might be looser than you’d like.
oEdRo Upgraded Soft Tri-fold Truck Bed Tonneau Cover
I ran into this problem while testing it. Although this might be seen as a problem, if you tighten them enough, any further problems should be absent. If you do, just take a piece of plastic and put it between the clamps and the truck bed so you get a tighter squeeze.
The fit for most people (including me and everyone I know that uses this tonneau cover) is pretty snug.
I haven’t heard from anyone that they had a problem with this product in that sense, so you shouldn’t worry either.
If you decide to use this cover for more than seven or eight months, you should expect to see some wear on it.
It’s not the highest quality, so don’t expect it to look as good as new after you’ve been using it for some time.
This is expected since this is a soft tri-fold cover and not a solid one. If you don’t like the feel of it, you should consider some other options
|Straightforward installation||Loose clamps|
|Snug fit||Shows wear after less than a year|
|Soft tri-fold instead of solid|
As I said, if you’re not into soft tri-fold covers, you should probably look for an alternative. Don’t force yourself into buying something just because people recommend it. Find something you think fits your criteria. Not the best Tacoma bed cover.
8. Syneticusa Aluminum Roll-Up Retractable Low Profile Hard Tonneau Cover
This is the only retractable tonneau cover on this list. This is for people who don’t like hard-surfaced truck bed covers.
One thing I have to advise you is to not rely on the instructions. I’ve seen people talk about it and I didn’t believe it until I got my hands on one of these, but the instructions really don’t make any sense.
Syneticusa Aluminum Roll-Up Retractable Low Profile Hard Tonneau Cover
Contrary to what some of you might think, this tonneau cover is pretty easy to install. If you follow your instincts, or if you find a good YouTube tutorial on how to set this tonneau cover, it shouldn’t take you more than 45 minutes.
It’s also quite sleek-looking for a soft cover, so if you value aesthetics – you’ll probably enjoy seeing this on your Toyota Tacoma.
Besides it being pretty, it really does the job that it’s meant to do. Keeping things in your truck bed clean and dry is something that this tonneau cover does with ease so if that’s the only reason for getting one – it’s a good choice.
There is a possibility that if you have a 2006. or an older Toyota Tacoma that you’ll notice some gaps on your tonneau cover. This is bad since that makes its purpose defeated.
But, if you have a newer model, you shouldn’t worry too much about it since it fits perfectly on mine that is quite younger than that.
|Quick setup||Bad instructions|
|Pretty-looking||Has gaps on older models|
|Can be hard to set up without additional instructions|
This is probably one of the most mediocre tonneau covers out there. But, if you like rollup truck bed covers and you don’t mind that you’ll have to potentially spend some extra time on setting it up, this just might be for you.
What Is The Best Tonneau Cover For Toyota Tacoma?
It’s hard to say which of these is universally the best. It all depends on your criteria and what you’re looking to get out of it.
If you ask me, I’d tell you that the best one is BAK BAKFlip MX4 hard Folding Truck bed Tonneau Cover. It might be a bit pricier than the rest of the competition, but you really do get some extra features for your money.
I always recommend saving a couple of extra bucks and putting it towards buying a better product for yourself.
Don’t think that this Tacoma tonneau cover review is here to sell you a product, but it’s here to help you pick the best one for yourself.
At the end of the day, you’re the one that’s going to use it almost every day, so you should be satisfied with the quality of the product.
